The European Commission put forward a new EU strategy on adaptation to climate change on 24 February 2021. In the words of UNSG Guterres: “ Adaptation must not be the forgotten component of climate action”.
As a proactive approach, it cannot only avoid future losses, but contribute to accelerating progress on many SDGs and help address the climate and the biodiversity crisis jointly, delivering multiple benefits for people and planet. We need to step up adaptation, increase our levels of preparedness and protect communities from the adverse effects of climate change, especially in the most vulnerable countries, such as Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).Īdaptation is a global goal of the Paris Agreement on a par with mitigation. Slow onset events, such as desertification, water scarcity, loss of biodiversity, land and ecosystem degradation, ocean acidification or sea level rise are equally destructive over the medium and long term and we are coming dangerously close to cascading tipping points. Extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent and intense: forest fires, heatwaves, droughts, hurricanes affect more and more lives and livelihoods and cause ample economic losses and disruptions. While mitigation efforts to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 are critical, halting all greenhouse gas emissions would still not prevent the climate impacts that are linked to past and current emissions.
